The Gold Star

Yesterday, while doing math, Dawson was working in his notebook and what would usually take a while to get done, he finished in no time at all. I was so proud of him because we have some major issues with keeping focused with math. I couldn't let this go with just a pat on the back! I really wanted him to know that he accomplished something that he has never done before. ( right about now I'm praying in my head, what do i do God, what do I do?) Remember I said I put all my homeschooling supplies together? I turned around and opened the first drawer I came to and I had star stickers looking right at me. I looked at Dawson and told him when I went to school, they gave out star stickers on your papers to take home and show your parents, but if were really good, you got a gold star! ( does any one else remember that?)
Dawsons eyes got big! I placed that gold star on his paper and he sat up so straight in his chair I could see pride all over him! I don't think he has ever felt like that....ever! Troy even came in and talked about the Gold Stars. ( now I'm thanking Jesus! 1st week of school and we have accomplished more than the last 5 years !)

Well..........

Dylan is sitting right next to Dawson. Dylan the little go getter, almost a year ahead, always happy, ready to do school everyday, big brown eyed self! He asks...."do I get a gold star?" ( Jesus!! JESUS!! what do I do?)

I wanted Dawson to know what he did was appreciated and it was exceptional.......do I now just throw stars out to everybody?!?

It broke my heart to tell Dylan that what Dawson did deserved extra special attention. He agreed with that, shook his head and we moved on, until about 15 seconds went by and the tears started flowing........O, did I feel awful! Poor kid, he could get a gold star every day of his life! When Dawsons nintendo ds broke, Dylan came to me and begged me to let him give his to Dawson. He was so happy to give that to his brother! If your cleaning up, dylan is there to help. He looks outside when it's pouring down rain and says "looks like a great day!" I can't believe I didn't cave in and fill his whole page with stars!

Now if you think I'm a terrible mother, let me just say, the next morning, Dawson got up out of bed ( even made it) got the school table in order to start the day, was sitting with his books and pencil in hand, ready to try for another gold star! I wasn't dressed or had coffee yet. NEVER! has that ever happened since we started home schooling!

Dylan has moved on and smiling again, although, he has lost another tooth. I think the tooth fairy is going to be verrrry nice to him. :)

I think you need a gold star on your mommy chart. You're doing a great job with your kids. And yes I remember the gold stars at school. Did we go to the same school? ;-)

AWESOME!!! So excited for Dawson! Poor Dylan! I am so proud of you and all that you are doing, Beth. You are an awesome mommy! FYI - I had really good prayer for you last night. Let me know if you need anything at all my friend.

Oh I really remember the Gold Stars!! What a great motivator too. My kids love them, but I don't use them as much as I would like to.
PS Love your pumpkin blooms!
