a garden

We planted a garden in the back yard this week end. A 4 foot by 16 foot area that is going to grow tomatoes and cucumbers and dill. (so far). Dylan was a huge help in the process and has worked his tail off this weekend weeding and raking and planting. Caitlin liked the idea also. She dug up dirt and watched all the lizards eat bugs. Troy was the real help, he cleaned out the spot that has had a pile of tree cuttings there for years! I could not have done it alone.

.

Dylan put all the bricks around the edge himself!

this is half of the garden...the other half is waiting to see if this half makes it :)

Looks great! I started my garden too. Looks like everyone is planting victory gardens again. Great lesson plan idea.

Greg_ what did you do for your tomatoes?

I mixed the soil with cow manure that i bought at a nursery and when they started to grow, i put in sticks and tied them to the sticks so they wound grow straight up. and every once and a while i would prune them. its a little hard to explain but its sort of like this: make a peace sign with your first two fingers and imagine a small stem starting to grow at the base between your two fingers. when you see two branchs, look where they come together (like your fingers do when you make a peace sign) and pluck the new stem that is starting to grow in between and pluck it out. you can get good tips from any nursery that sells the plants. it is important for the soil to be loose so the fragile roots can grow so i tilled the soil to loosen it up.

More people tell me cow manure was what they used too. You are the first to say they pruned them....

I need to keep the critters away....
